Winter Water Damage

Last week, we received a call during the rain storm about water coming into a basement bedroom of one of our awesome customers. We enlisted the services of our friends at Paul Davis Emergency Services to do the tear-out, dry-out, and preemptive mold remediation.

Then our work began. Water was flowing over the frozen ground and finding passage down the outside foundation wall, where it was not quite frozen due to the warmth of the building. It had navigated its way through some cracks in a compromised foundation and into the bedroom.

Digging frozen ground can be challenging, but Kallatch Home Services has the resources needed to service our customers in almost any situation. After we dug out the foundation, we cleaned and sealed it with a parge of hydraulic cement. Then a layer of foundation sealer, finally a layer of poly foam board to contain the warmth of the house, allowing the cement and sealer to cure completely, even in the sub-freezing temperatures.

Filling in the hole with frozen material, we covered it to await a warmer day when the ground can be correctly graded away from the foundation to allow surface water to run away from the home.

Next post, we will show you how we restored the interior so it could be reoccupied.
